Eco Safari Description

Season of the visit: Spring

Every year pupils in Scoil Na Croise Naofa explore the beautiful beaches on our doorstep in Dunfanaghy. We carry out a field study and also incorporate a beach clean up to play our part in our local community. The beaches we go to on our annual trip are Tramore, Killahoey and Marble hill.

This year we have invited a marine biologist from School of Science IT Sligo to assist us on our Seashore trip . We explore the rocky shoreline and examined and took samples from rockpools to observe back at school in trays. We learn about the biology of the shore: algal and Faunal zonation. The different habitats on the beach from the dunes to the sea . We see the impact we as humans have on our coast eg waste, erosion etc We also play games and have our lunch on the beach.

Next time you walk along a beach have a look for interesting things that have been washed ashore. Don’t pick up anything unless you have permission from your teacher.
